Wazirs
Wazirs are considered to be the most dangerous and warlike of all tribes in FATA. In fact, Sir Olaf Caroe, the last NWFP governor described Wazirs and Mahsuds as “panthers” and “wolves.” Similarly, John Masters, the British novelist called them “physically the hardest people on earth;” in 1920, they had mauled a British brigade, killing 400 men, including 28 British and 15 Indian officers.
Sir Herbert Edwardes who was the administrator of Bannu and later became the Commissioner of Peshawar in 1853, describes about his first meeting with the chief of the “redoubtable” Waziri tribe. It is interesting to read his account as mentioned in his diary:
“Mullick Swahan Khan, chief man among the neighbouring tribes of the Vizeerees (waziris], came into camp by invitation to see me. He is a powerful chief, and his country boasts that it has never paid tribute to any sovereign, but exacted it in the shape of plunder from all tribes alike. Swahan Khan is just what one might picture the leader of such a people: an enormous man, with a head like a lion, and a hand like a polar bear. He had on thick boots laced with thongs and rings, and trod my carpets like a lord. The Hindostanee servants were struck dumb and expected the earth to open. With his dirty cotton clothes, half redeemed by a pink loongee over his broad breast, and a rich dark shawl intertwined into locks that had never known a comb, a more splendid specimen of human nature in the rough I never saw. He made no bow, but with a simple “Salaam aleikoom” took his seat.”
The Wazirs are Muhammadans of the Sunni sect, but, like any other Pathan tribe, they are not particularly strict in the performance of their religious duties. The mullahs have influence only so far as the observances of religion go, and are powerless in political matters, but the Wazirs are an especially democratic and independent people, and even their own Maliks have little real control over them.
The Wazirs are civilized cultured organized and disciplined society. They faced the might of the British Empire and challenged their authority on almost all fronts. That is why the British Viceroy and Governor General of India compared the waziristan disturbance alone to be equal in the intensity to all other Agencies disturbances.
The Imperial gazetteer notes that the wazirs are by instinct intensly democratic and any man may arise by courage and wisdom to the position of Malik or leader; but these Maliks have often little influence and no real authority, and many who have attempted an untoward assumption of it have been assassinated.
Physically the Wazirs are tall and muscular, and they are also courageous, while, though poor, they are hospitable. They are a pastoral rather than an agricultural race. Unlike most other independent border tribes, the Wazirs have had the good sense to avoid, to a large extent, internal feuds, and their unity as a tribe is proverbial. Their blood feuds are consequently not so indiscriminate as those of some of their neighbours, it being ruled that the slaying of the actual murderer is sufficient.
Of the Wazirs, Enriquez tells us that they "are held in abomination by all their Pathan neighbours, who have a common saying to the effect that ' a Wazir will murder you for the sake of your pugaree.'
... To the poor of their own community they are said to be charitable, and they do not offer violence to the wives and children of their personal foes.
Their barbarity to all strangers, however, is such that every Pathan sepoy in the Indian Army longs for nothing so keenly as a Wazir war."
" Of the Wazir," said Edwardes, "it is literally true that his hand is against every man, and every man's hand against him."
The ancient home of the Wazirs appears to have been in Birmal, in Afghanistan, whence they began to move eastward at the close of the fourteenth century, ousting the Khattaks from Shawal and the Kohat border north of the Tochi. In process of time they took possession of the mountainous region about Shuidar, and the whole country as far as the Gomal River, south of which but few of their settlements are to be found.

The Wazirs belong to the Kakai branch of the Ghurghust Pathans, being descended from Wazir. The descendants of Wazir, who was the son of Suleiman, who was the son of Kakai, himself the son of Karlan and grandson of Ghurghusht, so that they are usually described as being a tribe of Karlanri or Ghurghusht Pathans. From this common origin come the Wazirs, a title which properly includes both Darwesh Khel and Mahsuds, but the name Wazir has now been practically appropriated by the former.
The Darwesh Khel (Wazir) are divided into two main clans :
1. The Utmanzais Wazir.
2. The Ahmadzais Wazir.
The Utmanzais Wazir live in North Waziristan, and also in FR Bannu.
The Ahmadzais Wazir live in South Waziristan, and also in FR Bannu.
Thus the Darwesh Khel (Wazir) occupy by far the larger portion of Waziristan — the southern, western and northern part of the country.
Utmanzai Wazirs
All the Utmanzai Wazirs are living in the North Waziristan Agency and some tribes living in birmal in Afghanistan. With the exception of Bakka Khel and Jani Khel, who inhabit the western F.R Bannu, their main centers in the Agency are Khaisora valley, Razmak, Dossali, Shawal, Dandai plain, Kaitu, Kurram river, Sheratla, Spinwam, Data Khil, Tochi Valley, and Sherani.
Utman had three sons, Ibrahim, Woli and Mohmit who in their return founded separate divisions.
